thirunallar temple

Thirunallar Temple in Pondicherry which lies 5 kilometer west of Karaikal. This is an ancient Siva temple probably constructed in 7th Century A.D.The sanctum sanctorum of Lord Dharbaraneswara. The temple holds Shiva as the main deity.

However, it's shrine is dedicated to Saneeswaran -also known as Saturn, who figures in the story of Nala-Damayanti; makes it the most famous Saturn temple in India. The blessings of Saturn are said to be overwhelming, while its wrath causes great misery. The temple hosts a mammoth festival (Shani peyarchi), each time Saturn moves from one sign of the zodiac to another.
One of the most popular Shani Temples in India is located at Thirunallar near Karaikal a part of Union Territory Pondicherry. There is a misconception that this Shani Shrine, or Saturn temple, is located in Tamil Nadu. The greatness of the Thirunallur temple is attributed to the unique idol of Lord Shani as he stands blessing the devotee – abhayahastham.

This is a very rare phenomenon and therefore thousands of devotees who believe they are badly affected by Shani visit the shrine to get his blessings.
